I think his ego was so big that he would have seen himself as an equal to someone like Lovecraft. I don't think the zodiac had a specific literary reason, other than to try to put himself in a league with other literary masters that he admired. But different authors do it for different reasons. In that case it's done with the purpose of looking like an archaic version of English, e.g.
Zodiac killer letters series#
The killer originated the name 'Zodiac' in a series of taunting letters sent to the local Bay Area press. Four men and three women between the ages of 16 and 29 were targeted. I'm no literature expert, but I've read a bunch of hp Lovecraft for example, and there's loads of intentional misspellings in there. The Zodiac murdered victims in Benicia, Vallejo, Lake Berryessa, and San Francisco between December 1968 and October 1969. But more likely, he fancied himself a writer, and it was his way of saying "look how clever I am, I'm basically like James Joyce aren't I."
It makes sense that he was maybe in his own way paying homage to these writers he admired. He was reading a lot of niche literature, particularly old stuff.
